2011 TOYOTA Yaris HSD Concept

Click Thumbnail to download (size 1600 x 1200 pixels)

Making its world debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the Toyota Yaris HSD concept embodies what will be an important step in Toyota's full hybrid roll-out strategy in Europe.

Toyota aims to complete the application of full hybrid technology across its main models in Europe as early as possible in the 2020s. Following the successful introduction of the Auris HSD to the C-segment in 2010, the Toyota Yaris HSD concept anticipates Toyota's intention to bring Hybrid Synergy Drive® to the B-segment, the biggest volume segment in Europe.

2011 Toyota FT-86 II Concept

The new Toyota FT-86 II Concept makes its world debut at the 2011 Geneva motor show, giving the clearest indication yet as to the final design of Toyota's next sports car. It marks a return to the passion for driving that has inspired great Toyota cars of the past, starting with the legendary 2000 GT in the 1960s.

With its long, low bonnet, high wings and rear-set cabin, the Toyota FT-86 II Concept pays homage to Toyota's sports car history and is an entirely driver-oriented concept. It was created at Toyota's European design studio ED2, where its styling was dubbed 'functional beauty': its bold, sweeping form has been generated purely according to the constraints of function and aerodynamics.

The low, highly aerodynamic bodyshell is stretched tight over the engineering hard points, with the muscular bodywork rendered as compact as possible. The concept measures 4,235mm long, 1,795mm wide and 1,270mm high, with a long, 2,570mm wheelbase.

Rather than using a heavy, large displacement powertrain to secure performance, the FT-86 II returns to Toyota's sporting roots by combining a free-revving boxer petrol engine with a compact and lightweight six-speed manual transmission and a low centre of gravity to achieve the best possible power to weight ratio.

Both the powertrain and the driving position have been set as low and as far back as possible to optimise balance for maximum poise, high-speed stability and agility. With a front-engine/rear-wheel drive configuration, this gives the car lively, accessible performance that is easy to harness and enjoy.

The Toyota FT-86 II Concept is the latest stage in the development of a new, compact rear-wheel drive sports car that is being jointly developed by Toyota and Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru). The new model will be launched in Europe in 2012.

Government Probe Finds no Link Between Electronics and Unintended Acceleration in Toyota and Lexus Vehicles

A 10-month long probe done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and NASA found no link between software-driven throttles and unintended acceleration in Toyota Motor Corp vehicles. The investigation concluded that the previously suspected sticking accelerator pedals and loose floor mats are to blame for the unfortunate incidents, which allegedly caused some 89 deaths.

“There is no electronic-based cause for unintended high-speed acceleration in Toyotas”, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement.

2011 Toyota Matrix Freshens up for Chicago Auto Show

Toyota has chosen this week's Chicago Auto Show to stage the reveal of the 2011 model year Matrix. If you're having a hard time finding the styling differences between the 2010- and 2011-MY versions of the Matrix, that's because the revisions are barely noticeable.

On the outside, the subtle refresh is limited to all-new front and rear bumpers with integrated front and rear underbody spoilers and a large mesh front fog lamp bezel. The newly designed 16-inch steel wheels and 17-inch, five-spoke alloy rims plus the introduction of a new Spruce Mica color round off the changes.

The 4x4 specialist last month confirmed that a production version of its exciting LRX concept will go into production at the company's Halewood plant in Merseyside. The latest Landy's 'green' credentials will be sealed by an electric-drive rear axle coupled to a 2-litre turbodiesel engine, capable of running on bio-diesel. CO2 output is predicted to be around 120 g/km, putting the 4x4 in one of the lowest road tax bands.

Altogether this battle for the Brit hybrid crown is a great sign that the UK-based car industry is weathering the economic downturn and looking forward to the cutting edge of new motor technologies.

2011 Toyota RAV4 on the way to a brand new adventure

The 2011 Toyota RAV4 now has an upgraded grille, tail lights and alloy wheels. It is still available in three models: the base model, sport model and the limited edition model. The base model has steel wheels and black door handles. The higher models have alloy wheels and door handles that are the same color as the body of the car. The limited edition model has a grille insert that is made of chrome. The sport model has optional run-flat tires so there is no longer any need to place a spare tire in the tailgate of the RAV4. The tailgate of the RAV4 opens like a car door instead of swinging it up like in most cars of its type.
